Edward Bender, husband of Marie Dahl Bender and father of Nancy, Michael, Sandy, William and Douglas, buried in St. Lawrence cemetery in Utica. His funeral mass was said from St. Lawrence Church in Utica. The family printed a funeral mass booklet for his services. The most memorable moments of this day for me was when they sang ""Gentle Woman"", tolled the mournful church bells as we were leaving the church, and at the cemetery when Craig and I were there watching the burial the sexton turned to me and asked if there was any jewelry that I might want to take off dad's dead body! The funeral luncheon was at the Sweden Haus in Utica. Just about all of dad's relatives were there and most of moms'. Ed Gamache kept saying over and over that he never thought he'd outlive dad.

Edward Paul Bender, son of Henry Charles Bender and Elizabeth Mary Ott, husband of Marie Dahl Bender, and father of Nancy, Michael, Sandy, William and Douglas Bender, had a massive heart attack and passed away in St. Joseph West hospital in Clinton Township at 6:25 am. Edward had been in deep shock over the loss of his son Bill & at 5 pm on the 28 of June 1982 he had a major heart attack in his home at 45430 Grant Pk in Utica and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital where he was put in the intensive care unit. They said that over 75% of his heart had been destroyed by this heart attack. At 6:23 am he awoke with another heart attack and quickly went into cardiac arrest. They worked on him for over 1 hour to no avail. He was pronounced dead at 7:25 am. Marie and Sandy went to the hospital and viewed his body for one last time, saying their final farewells, then left and went to Sullivan's Funeral Home to make the final arrangements. Ed had the same funeral as Bill, except in a different room. He had the same casket, the same mass card, and the same people came to visit him.

Norman John Bender buried. He was laid out at R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home at Harper off Outer Drive in Detroit. Norman's sons asked Agnes Radtke Bender which funeral parlor to use, and she suggested Harris which was 3 blocks from her home. Harris, unfortunately was the most expensive one in the area. Norman had a nice gray metal casket. He looked more like his dad, Henry Charles Bender in death than he did in life. We soon ran into a problem with religion. Norman and his older family were all Catholic and expected a Catholic service. However, his son Richard was Jehovah's Witness and wanted that religion for the service. The other kids were of no denomination, but had the feeling that Jehovah Witness Religion was really going to upset the apple cart. It did, too. The final sermon in the funeral parlor was given by the Jehovah Witness preacher. He sure did a good job of upsetting all Norman's very elderly brothers and sisters by telling them that when you're dead, your dead. Forget about life after death. Sure didn't go over too well with poor Uncle Art who was quite frail and had less than 1-year left.

Norman John Bender, son of Elisabeth Mary Ott Bender & Henry Charles Bender, suffered a stroke in his and Harold's apartment in the Parkside Projects on the 9th of November and was taken by ambulance to St. John Hospital in Detroit. He had been repairing Harold's TV. set when suddenly he was fascinated to see that the screwdriver started to float in midair! He then noticed that his arm was floating in midair too. His arm just sort of floated and danced around in mid air all by itself. When he walked across the room to sit down on the couch he noticed that his leg on that side didn't feel or act right either. So he laid down for awhile, then he noticed that his body on that side seemed to be losing sensation and control. He had Harold call an ambulance. The hospital diagnosed it as a stroke and a few days later decided to do a angiogram. That was a big, big mistake. It completely blocked the flow of blood to the brain and Norman lost consciousness. Before that happened, though, a Catholic priest sauntered into his room, heard his confession, covering his entire adult lifetime, forgave him his sins, gave him the last rites, and sent him on his way homeward. Norman sure lucked out in his last hours. Norman became very agitated in his last coma, so his ex-wife Evelyn sat with him and soothed him by speaking of events in their past lives that she thought he would enjoy reliving. He did enjoy it and settled right down. Evelyn said she was exhausted with all that talking day after day.

Nancy was celebrating Mike's birthday at 4651 Alter Rd and was eating dinner in the afternoon when suddenly labor started. I'm going to finish this birthday dinner first, Nancy declared to all of us. Just when it was time for dessert Nancy got a funny look on her face and said she'd better skip dessert and get to the hospital before it was too late! Nancy Bender Stephens, daughter of Edward Bender & Marie Dahl, married Donald Hunter Stephens in Angola, Indiana. Nancy went first with just Don's parents, but had to return home, as the Justice of the Peace would not marry her with her parent's consent. Don, Nancy, Hunter Coyle & Christine Young Stephens returned to Detroit and confronted Nancy's parents with the attempted elopement. Ed and Marie Dahl Bender held their breath for fear of Nancy's future, but gave their consent, albeit reluctantly. Marie returned to Angola with Don and Nancy, Mr. & Mrs. Stephens and Nancy and Don were married in Angola. On the way back home the car lost a wheel, which went flying clear across the highway. Marie was very upset with the Justice of the Peace, who was very crude, swore and gave Don & Nancy his card ""in case you change your mind"". The marriage lasted 36 years, most of them quite happy, and produced 4 beautiful children, Warren Donald, Linda Marie, Donna Christine and Craig Michael Stephens.

During hard times Elisabeth used to go to her cousin Judge Ott's home on Meldrum right off Gratiot and beg for money and food. Sometimes Ed Bender would go with his mother, but his mother always left him on the doorstep and went in alone. Ed always longed to go into the house, but he never did. John H. Becker Jr. died. Is buried in the Becker family plot in Mt Eliott cemetery. Was a plumber most of his life and owned his own plumbing shop. Was destroyed economically by the depression. John had 3 children in wedlock, Richard Becker, born 1890, died 1922 of a bad heart, Estella, born 1892, died 1970, and Rhea, born 1896. He was also the father of Arthur Bender I. And there is also a humorous story connected to John. One day he came home carrying a cute bundle of joy named Adelaide. Seems that his married girlfriend's husband took one look at Adelaide, and said, ""That's not my kid, get rid of it!"" So she delivered it to John in his plumbing shop, and he then took it home and said to his wife, honey, guess what I brought home! His wife was really nice about it, raised Adelaide and treated her as one of their own.

Edward Paul Bender married Marie Henrietta Dahl in Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Detroit at 8 am. Elsie Daniels and Joseph Radtke were their brides maid and best man. No other family members were present as they kept their marriage quiet for 3 months. Marie lost her wedding rings and substituted instead a big, brassy cheap ring she had borrowed from her mother. It looked terrible! Then Ed forgot to pay the priest and to pick up a copy of his marriage license he was so nervous! The priest cleared his throat and asked dad if he hadn't forgotten something. Then dad was so busy watching mom as he drove down Gratiot Ave that he almost got hit by a streetcar'.

Edward Paul Bender and Marie Henrietta Dahl had their first date together. They agreed to go roller-skating together. Katherine Klein Bender died in her daughter, Elisabeth Wittenberg's house on Wayburn in Grosse Pointe Park. She was 90 year's old. She died of old age. If anyone ever attended their own funeral, it would have been great-grandmother Katherine, for she just loved to attend ""funies"" (her pronunciation for funerals). Whenever she would see a hearse pull into St. Ambrose church she would be off the porch and down the street in a flash in order to attend the ""funie"".

Agnes Ott Koch Me Dermitt, her 2nd husband, Henry Me Dermitt, and her two children Joanne C., aged 2 and Henry J. aged 6 buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Detroit. They were laid out at Burke funeral home in Detroit. It was one of the largest funerals in the city of Detroit. People lined up for blocks and blocks in order to file through the funeral home to see the quadruple suicide-murder victims. The two adult caskets were horizontal with the wall and the two children's caskets were perpendicular. There was no funeral mass as Henry could not be taken into church. They are buried in the N1/2, Section 46 of Mt Olivet, all together. It is a wonder that Agnes' family ever buried the wife and children with Henry. Another sad sequel to this story - Wilber Koch, youngest son of Agnes and William Koch killed himself one year later; he could not live with what had happened to his mother.

Agnes Ott Koch Me Dermitt, sister of Elisabeth Ott Bender, daughter of Sophie Becker Ott and Wilhelm Ott, was drowned by her husband, Henry Me Dermitt, who had been a heavy drinker and who had purchased a new car for just this purpose. Agnes was very frightened of her husband as he was suffering from DT's, was seeing things crawling on the walls, and was very unstable emotionally. Agnes had taken steps to have her husband committed for treatment, he had found out about it, bought a new car, forced her and her children by him (he left her children by her first husband William Koch at home), into the car, took them for a ride to ""Motor Boat Lane"", a canal at the floor of Parkview Ave and deliberately backed the car off the pier into about 15 feet of water. Agnes' screams were heard by passersby as the car slowly submerged into the water with her, her husband and two children, Harry, 6 and Joann, 3 inside. Agnes' door was held shut by her husband, whose hand still held the door fast after death. Agnes' knuckles were all bruised where she banged them against the window, trying to break the glass. All 4 drowned in the car at the bottom of the canal. These deaths were such a shock to Ed Bender and his mother Elisabeth Ott Bender, who first learned of the deaths in the morning newspaper on the 30 of March.

Sophie Becker Ott, daughter of Johannes Becker and Elisabeth Friedrichs Becker, and mother of Elisabeth Mary Ott, died in Detroit at the age of 71. Sophie had lost her husband Wilhelm Ott 29 years ago and had raised her 3 daughters by herself. She lived for years at 460 Moran St in Detroit, the house purchased for the family by Wilhelm. The family attended St. Bernards Catholic Church off the Boulevard. Her first 3 grandchildren were baptized there, Helen Ott, daughter of Anne K. Ott, Arthur Bender, son of Elisabeth Mary Ott Bender, and William Ott Koch, son of Agnes Ott Koch Mc Dermitt. Sophie was very hard of hearing and mispronounced many words because she could not hear them properly. An example of this is that she called her granddaughter, Mildred Bender Neff ""Rilla"" as that is what she heard when the family called her Mildred. Sophie suffered a broken leg in her later years when she was riding a Detroit Street Car (the old Detroit Urban Railway System), and it stopped suddenly, throwing her to the floor. Her gait was never right after her leg healed and she walked with a limp.

John Dahl Dale, son of Elenore Dahl Mc Kinin,3 born in Hutzel Hospital in Detroit. Elenore was sent to the corner store one pretty spring day to get ice cream cones and candy for her younger brother, Bill, as her mom Nellie couldn't stand to hear him sitting on the step and whining. Elenore went to the store that was in the same block as her house, 1/2 block away with no streets to cross and bought the ice cream cones and candy. On the way back home, just 3 houses from her own, a big dark hand came out of nowhere, she was pulled into the alley and out of that horror story a beautiful little boy was born this date. John figures that the Lord must have had a definite purpose for him in life, for Elenore went to the hospital that night to prevent conception, and then had 3 appointments to try to have an abortion. John feels that it is nothing short of a miracle that he's still here. John was put into foster care by his grandfather William F. Dahl Sr. through the Sacred Heart and St. Peter Claver Churches in Detroit. William followed John's progress and whereabouts until Bill disappeared in 1929. John was named John Dahl at birth, was put into the care of a woman who renamed him and evaded the St. Vincent De Paul Society when she realized that they discovered she did not have the stable background she had depicted. When he started school, the St. Vincent De Paul found him, walked into the classroom and picked him up in the middle of the day. Can't I even get my clothes, my toys, and say goodbye to mama, he asked them. A terse, NO! was the reply. He had a very scary car ride from Detroit to Newport, near Monroe in the middle of the winter. He remembers being scared to death, looking at that desolate blanket of snow that covered all that vacant farmland. He was deposited at a farmhouse right on the water. He was very happy there. The foster mother was very kind and she used to sit him on her knee and tell him how he belonged to a big white family in Detroit. John was very happy there. Then when he was 11 years old, someone in town noticed that the storeowners' daughter seemed to be taking an interested in John which was not reciprocated. That will never do, someone somewhere decided, and just as suddenly as he had come, he was ripped out of this happy home. He was then placed with another foster family in Detroit. He was not happy there, so he walked from Detroit back to Newport. The foster mother in Newport knew she would get into trouble for keeping him, so she returned him to them. John then had a series of bad placements with people who had no interest in him. When he was 15 he had enough, and walked to Indiana. He injured his hand, went to a biracial doctor who figured he was a runaway. John insisted he was not a runaway, but rather was 18. It was wartime; if you're 18 the doctor said, then you belong in the Army, and in John went. The service is the best place for a biracial person who wants to make something of himself, the doctor told John. John was recognized by someone who was responsible for his foster care placement in Detroit, and knew he was John Dahl, not John Dale, as he now called himself. But they let him stay in the service. John went on to get an education, got employment with the Federal Government, and did exceptionally well for himself, better in fact, than most of his cousins with more fortunate beginnings. He married Virginia, a highly intelligent, most personable and professional person. They have a rich and prosperous life, in spite of, or perhaps because of, John's rough start in life. John always deliberately kept himself out of any real trouble because he wanted to be someone his mother would be proud of someday when he could find her. And this story has the happiest of endings, for after a long and involved search, John did indeed find his beloved mom, alive and well in Florida, and it was a most emotional and tear filled reunion. Elenore's little boy, whom she worried about, cried over and prayed for all through the years, but most especially on his birthday, whom she had never seen, had now returned to the fold, some 60 years after he was so cruelly taken from her.

Harry Koch, son of Agnes Ott Koch Me Dermitt and William Koch Sr. died in a streetcar accident at Gratiot just north of 7 Mile while delivering newspapers. Edward Bender, his first cousin said that Harry was a very sharp-witted young fellow and Ed never could figure out how he got himself run over by a streetcar. Ed went and looked over the scene of the accident to try to figure out how it happened. Arthur F. Bender, Ed's half brother was called to the morgue to identify little 10-year-old Harry Koch's body. Art said his little back was all ripped open. Henry was buried in 248 M, in the Ott family plot in Mt. Elliott cemetery in Detroit. The Kochs and the Mc Dermitts were truly a star-crossed family. The number of deaths which took place in that family from 1884 to 1928 was truly phenomenal.

Dorothy Dahl, 8 year old daughter of Nellie Rehfeldt Dahl and William Frederick Dahl, killed while crossing Kercheval in front of her Grandma Henkel's house. Grandma Henkel lived downstairs and Bill and Nellie lived upstairs with their 6 children. Nellie was paralyzed in bed and was not able to move or to get up. Nellie and Bill's relatives took turns coming over to help take care of the kids, but on this day no one was over. Dorothy was sitting on the lower back yard porch and Mildred was standing on the upstairs porch. Mildred started leaning over the rail and spitting at Dorothy. Dorothy told Mildred to cut it out, but Mildred kept spitting at her. Dorothy got up and went to the front of the house. Her girlfriend was standing across the street with library books in her arm and she asked Dorothy to come across the street and come home with her and look at her library books. Dorothy ran out into Kercheval, a truck just missed her, then a car driven by Mr. Zanith struck her, throwing her high up into the air. She came down like a rag doll, every bone in her body having been broken. Her dad had to park his car on Kercheval by Mt Elliott as the cars were backed up that far. Bill was cussing out the traffic jam, little knowing that it was his little girl, broken and bleeding to death in the street that was the cause of it all. As he approached, the crowd stared at him murmuring, ""Here comes the father now!"".

Anne K. Ott, sister of Elisabeth Ott Bender, and daughter of Sophie Becker Ott & Wilhelm Ott, succumbed after a hard fought battle with ovarian cancer. She was only 22 years old. Her family kept vigil over her in the many weeks of her final agony, each taking their turn comforting and nursing her. Elisabeth Ott Bender, who had 4 small children of her own to care for, the youngest being 10 month old Edward, had just gone home to rest after sitting up with her sister all night long. She had left her 8-year-old daughter Mildred Bender Neff there as her sister was very bad and she wanted Mildred to come and get here if her sister got any worse. Around 8:30 am Anne took a turn for the worse and Sophie knew it would soon be over. She told little grandchild Mildred to run all the way home and don't stop and tell her mom to get right back. Poor little Mildred ran all the way home and collapsed from total exhaustion as soon as she fell in the front door, gasping for air, telling her mom that Anne was dying, and to get right back. Grandma rushed right back and was there when Anne passed away shortly afterwards.

William Frederick Dahl, son of Minna Kaiser and Fred Dahl, married Nellie Rehfeldt, daughter of John Charles Rehfeldt and Pauline Bruckner at Sacred Heart Church in Detroit. Nellie used to say that when she went over to the Dahls for supper, there were all these big kids sitting on two long benches in front of a big dinner table having supper. Both Bill and Nellie lost a lot of sleep the night before the wedding. Each was afraid of the future, afraid they were not doing the right thing. Nellie had been real reluctant to marry. She said it would be better to date a while longer, that marriage just meant a lot of kids and a lot of work. They were married by the Rev. Leo Strauss, and their witnesses were Otto Kaiser, Bill's cousin and Tracy Schneider, Nellie's friend.

Johannes served for a while in the Civil War and was badly injured at the Battle of Gettysberg. He had 5 children, Sophia, born 1856, Nicholas John, born 1858, died 1897, John H born 1865, died 1941, Mary E. who married Charles Cavanaugh, and Elizabeth Becker who married Harry Booms, had 5 children, died in childbirth, and left her parents, who were in their 70's at the time, to raise her children. Harold Sanderson Neff, husband of Mildred Bender Neff born in Detroit. His mother owned quite a bit of property in Grosse Pointe, including quite a few parcels right on the water. How Harold had wished she had kept a few of those waterfront parcels. Harold inherited quite a bit from his mother when she passed away around 1949, but she had often used her money and property to control Harold and Mildred's lives. Harold was a wonderful husband to Mildred, very kind, considerate, loving and a good provider. And a lot of fun to be with. Some of our fondest memories are of times we spent with Harold. He built two houses from scratch for Mildred, the one on St. Clair (where Mildred's dad, Henry Bender dug out the basement with a scoop pulled by two horses, Nancy and Jim that belonged to his employer, Huntz Manzel) and on Glenwood in Clinton Township.

Charles John Rehfeldt, father of Nellie Rehfeldt, fell off the roof of a tavern where he had been conducting a band. He badly injured his leg, which did not heal and led to his demise on the 13th of July 1898. Nellie was taken out of school in the fifth grade by her mother to care for her father when this happened, and little Nellie was never to return to school again. The doctor told Charles and Pauline that he thought he might be able to save Charles' life if he amputated the badly injured, infected leg, but Charles steadfastly and repeatedly refused to let the doctor remove his leg. Pauline was bitter the rest of her life as she felt that Charles did not need to die and leave her all alone and she felt that it was his obligation to have his leg amputated to try to save his life.

Rhea Becker Buehler, daughter of John H. Becker born. John created a big row when Rhea was born as she was so very dark complected. He accused his wife of having an affair with a Negro mailman. The dark complectedness no doubt came from John, however, as his son Arthur Bender also had the same very dark complexion as a child and when Art's brothers and sisters got mad at him, they'd call him a nigger and say that he wasn't their brother. That dark complexion sure made life miserable for those two kids. She married Charles Buehler.

Wilhelm Ott, son of Peter Ott & Eva Carolina Knapp Ott, and husband of Sophie Becker Ott and father of Elisabeth Ott Bender, Anne K. Ott and Agnes Ott Koch Mc Dermitt, died in his home on Moran St in Detroit, just off Grand Boulevard. He was a stonecutter for David Knapp, his cousin. Wilhelm was born and riased in Baden-Baden, Germany, married his first wife and had two children there, Pauline & Adolph Ott. His cousin David Knapp needed stone cutters so he talked Wilhelm into coming to Detroit to work in the Knapp Stone Yard on Atwater St. Wilhelm inhaled stone dust from 1870 to 1892 and in the end could not breathe and coughed up blood. He was very ill and in very bad spirits from not being able to breathe or to work. He spent the last year of his life in bed on Moran St and was very verbally and physically abusive to his wife & daughters. He used to lie in bed and write rotten filthy things about his wife Sophie on his bedroom wall, always unfavorably comparing her to his first wife who died of cancer. One week before he died, in a fit of temper he got up off his death bed and beat Sophie black and blue. When the doctor came to tend to him he found Sophie so badly beaten that she could barely move to come to the door to let him in. She was black and blue over her entire body. The doctor was absolutely furious! Wilhelm, he said, if you weren't so near to death, I'd get the police and have you arrested!

Agnes Ott Koch MC Dermitt born in Detroit, the daughter of Sophie Becker Ott and Wilhelm Ott. She married William Koch. Had one child William whom her husband adopted. They then had more children, Marvin, who inherited Sophie Becker's hearing problem, Harry who was killed by a street car at age 10 while delivering newspapers, and Wilbur, the youngest who killed himself one year after his mother drowned, and Lillian, who married a Jewish man and moved to Chicago. Agnes' father died when she was only 7 years old. Bill Koch, her first husband was very good to her. He had a prosperous trucking company, the Gold Medal trucking company. He suddenly developed pneumonia and died. She was left with the company and had no idea how to run it. She married Henry Mc Dermitt, one of her husband's employees, who she figured could run the company. That was a big mistake. Mc Dermitt was a heavy drinker, got the delirium tremens, (DT'S), saw snakes and bugs all over the walls, and went berserk. Agnes was very frightened of him, told her family of her fright and how she was planning on committing him so he could get help and he refused to help himself. He got wind of her plans, got furious, bought a new car, took her and their two kids for a nice spring ride, went to Motorboat Lane at the foot of Parkview and deliberately drowned the whole family in 15 feet of water. When they pulled the car up, his hand was still across Agnes' body, holding her car door shut.

The hughest snow storm to hit Detroit ever, when little grandpa Bill was only 1 day old'. It snowed 3 foot on a level and piled into 7-foot drifts! I'm sure grandma Henkel was a nervous wreck till all the snow melted and they could get around again. But Grandma Henkel's cutest snowstorm story concerned little Willy and a later snowstorm. Someone in the room had just told a huge snowstorm story, and Minna Henkel replied, Oh that's nothing! You should have seen this one snowstorm! It snowed all day and then all night and the next day we were completely snowed in. I tried to open the front door, but the snow was so Deep the door wouldn't open. So I tried to open the back door, but the snow covered that completely too, and it also was sealed shut. So I opened a window and lifted little Willie out the window and told him to go to the barn and get a shovel. And as I watched Willie make his way to the garage, I almost died laughing! The snow was higher than the little boy, it was over his head, so he wiggled to the garage like a little rat!

The Dahl boys, Friedrich Johann and Wilhelm, arrived in Woodslee at the home of their Uncle Francis Furth. Francis had been a farmer in Canada since 1870, first in the Niagara Fallsarea and now in Woodslee. When the Dahl boys arrived, they found that Francis had not yet harvested his corn crop as it had rained continually since early September. They were not able to get farm machinery into the wet, soggy fields, so they ended up harvesting the corn by dragging chains through the fields. Wilhelm bought a farm from Mr. Hutzel in 1885 while Fred went to Detroit and became a bricklayer. They stayed close all their lives, visiting back and forth frequently.

Mathilda (Tillie) Doench Meinke Vandervoort, eldest sister of Nellie Rehfeldt Dahl, quietly passed away at Eastside General Hospital in Detroit. Mathilda had had a full, rich life, full of warm heartedness and generosity, and full of love and laughter. She was a very intelligent, quick witted person who was also quick to help out in times of need. She provided food and carfare for his sister Nellie and her children after Nellie lost her husband Bill in 1929. Marie Dahl Bender remembers well walking the awfully long way to Aunt Tillie's house on 4870 Canton, in order to get a good hot meal, lots of laughter and good times, and then bags full of groceries and carfare home. Tillie will be remembered for generations to come for her goodness and generosity, for tales of her are often passed from generation to generation. The Lord was not so generous with poor Tillie, though. Year in and year out she looked for and longed for a second child. It never came. One time she even had a false pregnancy, she longed for a new baby so. When she went to the doctor for her ""pregnancy"", the doctor told her, Tillie you're not pregnant, but your sister Hattie is! Hattie groaned right along with Tillie. Not another one was Hattie's plea! Poor sisters! Tillie couldn't start one and Hattie couldn't stop them from coming! Such is life. Tillie's first husband, Charles Doench, died on pneumonia which he caught building his own garage in the rain with his brother-in-law, Bill Dahl. Tillie's second husband, Fred Meinke died early too, leaving her once again a young widow. Fred used to worry so much about Tillie, and when she was gone shopping too long, he used to call around to all the hospitals to see if something happened to her. Tillie used to get so exasperated with Fred! After Fred died, Tillie married another very nice man, Earl Vandervoort. Earl took care of her very attentively through several strokes she had suffered in the last 10 years of her life. Tillie was confined to a wooden rocking chair, just like the one her sister Nellie sat in in the last years of her life. Earl waited on her hand and foot. Tillie's house in 1963 was exactly the same as it had been at the turn of the century, same furniture, same decoration. It was an eerie experience to go there in 1963, like stepping into a time warp and coming out in 1898. Tillie was very good to her baby sister Lizzie, who was not quite right and who lived on Forest, about 3 blocks away. Lizzie used to come to Tillie's house and Tillie would bake up a storm for her. After Tillie was paralyzed somewhat by the strokes she couldn't bake anymore, and felt so bad when Lizzie would come around and beg for fresh baked goods. Lizzie just never understood that Tillie just couldn't get around anymore. Tillie died on 1-23-65 at 6:15 am from ASHD arteriosclerotic heart disease and diabetes mellitus. She was 86 years old.

Charles Bruckner, uncle of Nellie Rehfeldt Dahl fought in the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. He just finished moving around the Confederate troops at North Anna River, and was marching towards Mechanicsville. Grant came face to face with Lee at Cold Harbor, something he was trying to avoid. The Union Army was now only 10 miles northeast of Richmond. Grant had 108,000 men in this battle, Lee had only 59,000, yet Lee routed the Union troops. However, due to the sheer size of the Union Army, they forced their way on to Richmond.

Charles Bruckner, brother of Marie Dahl's grandmother Pauline Bruckner, married Catherine Hilsendagen in Detroit. Charles was serving in the Union Army in the Civil War and received a leave of absence to return to Detroit. He told a big fib to get his leave from the army. He said that his mother, Louisa Bruckner, had died on the 10th of September, 1863 and that his little 10 year old sister was living with strangers and that being her only living relative he had to go back to Detroit and make proper living arrangements for her. Charles had a brother Edward born in 1842 and a sister Louisa born in 1844 who were in Detroit and could look after his little sister, Pauline. The real reason he wanted to get back to Detroit was that he had just received a $200 2nd Lieutenant enlistment bonus and he wanted to use this money to marry his sweetheart. And that is precisely what he did on this date. He then returned to the Civil War for its duration, and was one of the Union Soldiers who had the privelege of planting U.S. Battle Flag on the Confederate breastworks and following the defeated Confederate Army to the Appomattox Court House. He was married by Joseph Kuhn, Justice of the Peace. The witnesses to the marriage were John Maertz & Frank Sedenbier, both of Detroit.

Johannes (John) Becker bought land for his cooper shop on Gratiot Ave, just outside of downtown Detroit. The cooper shop has since been razed to make way for the I‑75 freeway. The cooper shop was right across the street from St. Joseph's church and the I‑75 freeway now comes into Gratiot Ave at precisely the spot where the cooper shop used to stand. This land was purchased by Johannes Becker & August Keratz from Peter Ebertz & wife Margaretha of Detroit, and received a quitclaim to lot 29 of FJB Crane's subdivision of out lot 16, Witherall farm, north of Gratiot Rd in Hamtramck. Louise Bruckner Schonau Herbertz, daughter of Louise Rose and William Charles Bruckner, and sister of Pauline Bruckner Rehfeldt, was born in Schwarzburg/Sonderhausen, Thuringen, Germany. She immigrated to America when she was 9 years old. Married twice, no children. The 2nd husband was a physician and when she died she left the family a lot of money. She was a quiet thin, friendly person. Pauline used to buy her candy for after dinner treat when she came to visit as she had a sweet tooth. Family oral history states that Louise was rather eccentric as she had an awful lot of money, yet she used to go to the Eastern Market and dig through the trashcans for fruit. In her last years she lived only a few blocks away from her sister Pauline Rehfeldt and her brother Charles.
